All I brought with me on my trip to Bonita was my 35mm film camera. I also only brought it out once, when my mom and I brought the kids to the beach. It was kind of wonderful and I love 35mm because you get 36 images vs 16. Film is always so interesting to me because you never really know how the photos turned out. There is no screen on the back of the camera to see what you just shot. Once you finish a roll of film, you have to physically mail the film to a lab for processing. After the lab receives your film, it takes a few days for them to develop the film and finally, email the digital scans back to you. The whole process takes a little over a week, so my focus for the 52 week project seems to be a week late. The word for this particular week was horizons. While we were at the beach, I tried to find different ways to photograph my kids with the horizon in mind.
Side note, the fact that the beach looked healthy and beautiful did not go unnoticed. The water was back to it's normal beautiful shade of turquoise. There were fish and cocinos. There was a faint scent of something, but nothing like the red tide we saw for so many months. The kids were thrilled to be able to swim in the Gulf water. The harsh reality that this is temporary and we could see the effects of toxic algae and red tide again in just a few months is not lost on me . I am just truly grateful that my children were able to experience the beach where I used to go and play as a child, and see it in all of its beauty.
